Tak pernah ada dalam pikirannya, namanya sekarang menjadi pembicaraan orang terutama dari komunitas buku. Dua bulan yang lalu, ia hanyalah seorang pegawai yang berkutat dengan analisis keuangan di PT Telkom, Bandung, yang pada saat Aceh dilanda tsunami tergerak hatinya untuk menjadi seorang relawan.
"Saya juga heran kenapa novel yang saya tulis dalam waktu 3 minggu itu, bisa menjadi pembicaraan orang banyak. Menulis merupakan dunia baru bagi saya yang tak pernah terbayangkan sebelumnya," ucap Andrea Hirata, penulis Novel Laskar Pelangi, yang dalam waktu 5 minggu terjual habis dan sekarang sedang menjalani cetak kedua.
Sarjana lulusan Fakultas Ekonomi Universitas Indonesia dan S2 dari Sheffield Hallam University, Inggris, mengaku sudah lama ingin menulis Laskar Pelangi, namun tidak pernah terwujud hingga suatu saat kejadian tsunami di Aceh membawanya menjadi relawan dan hatinya tersentuh melihat banyak sekolah yang hancur.
Terinspirasi sebuah kisah nyata, ia pun mulai menulis novel yang bercerita tentang pengabdian dua orang guru (Pak Harfan dan Ibu Muslimah) dan sepuluh anak miskin, yang berjuang untuk bersekolah meski sekolahnya, SD Muhammadiyah Pulau Belitung (SD yang paling tua di Belitung dan miskin), terancam ditutup oleh pemerintah daerah.
Belitung sendiri meski terkenal sebagai Pulau Timah, namun tak dapat dinikmati oleh penduduk aslinya. Belitung adalah kabupaten kepulauan yang dikelilingi hampir 200 pulau besar dan kecil. Sejak akhir tahun 2000, kabupaten berpenduduk lebih dari 2 ratus ribu jiwa ini menjadi bagian dari propinsi Bangka Belitung. Beragam etnis hidup berdampingan di kawasan yang memiliki panorama indah ini.Meskipun mengaku tidak memiliki latar belakang sastra, namun sebagaimana ciri khas orang Melayu, Andrea terbiasa mendengarkan cerita dari para orang-orang tua di kampungnya yang bercerita tentang sejarah dan cerita-cerita klasik Melayu Belitung. Sehingga tak heran, dalam menulis Laskar Pelangi, Andrea memiliki gaya penuturan yang kuat, filmis dan cerdas.
Ketika membaca Laskar Pelangi, Anda seakan menemukan Gabriel Garcia Marquez ketika ia bercerita tentang seorang dukun buaya bernama Bodenga, menemukan Nikolai Gogol ketika menuliskan karakter para anggota Laskar Pelangi dan ironi kehidupan penduduk asli Belitung. Atau seperti Alan Lightman saat menceritakan pertikaian ilmiah yang mempertentangkan teori fisika optik antara kawan sebangkunya Lintang yang jenius dengan seorang guru fisika.
"Saat menulis novel ini, yang terpatri diotak saya adalah mengeluarkan semua yang ada dalam pikiran saya. Sebagai tempat curahan hati, saya pun menulis. Ternyata menulis itu mengasyikan dan membuat kita lupa waktu. Akhirnya, seperti sudah menjadi ritual, seusai pulang kantor, saya langsung menulis. Saat menulis saya tak mau tahu apakah tulisan saya itu bagus atau jelek, apakah tulisan saya itu sesuai dengan komposisi, yang penting adalah tulis, tulis dan tulis !," papar pria yang dari Sheffield Hallam University dengan predikat graduate with distinction.
Sebenarnya, dengan membaca Laskar Pelangi, kita bisa mengetahui seperti apa masa kecil Andrea Hirata. Karena lewat tokoh si Ikal, Andrea hadir dalam novel tersebut. "Novel ini merupakan memoar tentang masa kecil saya, yang membentuk saya hingga menjadi seperti sekarang. Karena itulah saya sangat berterima kasih dapat bersekolah di sekolah miskin dan memperoleh persahabatan yang indah dari teman-teman saya. Tak lupa, terima kasih yang sebesar-besarnya kepada semua guru saya, yang tak pernah mengharapkan rasa terima kasih kecuali melihat siswanya menjadi orang yang berberhasil", jelas Andrea yang memberikan royalti novelnya kepada perpustakaan sekolah miskin.
Novel ini sendiri direncanakan oleh Andrea merupakan trilogi. Karena itulah, ditengah kesibukannya menjadi pegawai negeri dan pembicara dalam diskusi mengenai Laskar Pelangi, ia terus menulis novel kedua dan ketiganya. Novel keduanya diberinya judul Edensor, yang merupakan kelanjutan dari masa-masa perjuangan Andrea bersama teman-temannya yang termarginalkan. Sedangkan buku ketiga, tentang patriarki dalam budaya orang Melayu.
Keinginan lain Andrea atas novelnya adalah dibuatkan menjadi film. "Agar misinya tersampaikan. Jika ada yang mau membuat filmnya saya kasih gratis, tentunya dengan ada syarat bahwa pengambilan shooting harus dilakukan di Belitung sendiri, sesuai dengan novelnya. Saat ini memang sudah ada yang menawarnya untuk dijadikan film televisi, namun tanpa mengurangi rasa hormat kepada mereka, saya lebih berkeinginan novel ini menjadi film layar lebar", ucapnya sambil tersenyum.
Ditengah euforia novel bertema chiklit, teenlit, dan metropop, kehadiran Andrea Hirata dan Laskar Pelanginya memang bagaikan oase ditanah kering. Ironi dan liku-liku hidup kedua guru dan kesebelas anak-anak, yang dijuluki ibu gurunya sebagai para "laskar pelangi", sungguh menggetarkan. Kesulitan yang mereka alami serta bagaimana beberapa dari mereka, antara lain Andrea sendiri, akhirnya dapat keluar dari kesulitan tersebut memberi benang merah pada novel ini sebagai sebuah bacaan yang sangat inspiratif dan mampu memberi kekuatan.

There has never been in his mind, his name is now a community of people speaking mainly from books. Two months ago, he was an employee struggling with financial analysis in PT Telkom, Bandung, which at the time of the tsunami-stricken Aceh moved to become a volunteer.
"I also wonder why the novel that I wrote in 3 weeks, it could be a conversation many people. Writing is a new world for me that was never imagined before," said Andrea Hirata, the author of Laskar Pelangi Novel , which is within 5 weeks of sold-out and is currently undergoing a second printing.
He graduated from the Faculty of Economics, University of Indonesia and S2 from Sheffield Hallam University, UK, admitted that he had long wanted to write Laskar Pelangi, but never realized until one day the tsunami in Aceh led him to become volunteers, and his heart was touched to see many schools were destroyed.
Inspired by a true story, he began writing a novel that tells of the dedication of two teachers (Mr. Harfan and Mrs. Muslimah) and ten poor children, who struggle to attend school even though school, SD Muhammadiyah Belitung Island (the oldest and poor school in the Pacific Islands), threatened closed by local governments.
Belitung though famous as an tin island, but can not be enjoyed by residents of the original. Belitung is a district of nearly 200 islands surrounded by large and small islands.
